To mark Mick Hogg's retirement at 85 years young, we've had a short documentary video commissioned that includes both our business history as well as Mick's life. |
Project Lighting was founded by Mick Hogg in 1972. He took up a partnership with Building Electrical Supplies, which was soon renamed Project Lighting in premises in Altree Court, Phillip, ACT, Australia.
We have always had as an important feature of our business the target markets of: Domestic Lighting, Electrical contractors, Architects, Consultants and Commercial Developers.
With the rapid development of Canberra in the 1970’s, a new shop was opened in the new town of Belconnen in 1976. The premises were located in Nettlefold Street. The growing business at Phillip required expansion so the electrical trade store was moved to Botany Street in 1983.
The establishment of the new town in the Tuggeranong Valley prompted the opening of another new branch located at the Erindale Centre in Wanniassa in 1988. Further population growth in the Tuggeranong Valley prompted a move from Erindale to the Tuggeranong Town Centre in 1992.
The opportunity arose in 1991 to purchase a building in Townshend Street, Phillip to consolidate domestic lighting, electrical trade and administration on the one site. After extensive renovation of the building, including turning the internal staircase around, closing up the backyard and knocking out a new driveway entrance and exit, the move to Townshend Street was completed in 1992.
At the end of 1994, Project Lighting joined “Electrolink”, a buying group of independently owned electrical wholesalers.
The Queanbeyan, NSW branch was opened in August 1995.
In preparation for Y2K, we installed a new computer in April 1999. With the new computer, we were in a better position to adopt full stock control. Computerised ordering was implemented and goods received were entered into the computer, enabling stock control to run in real time.
The old Belconnen Milk Depot site was purchased at auction in December 2000 and plans commenced to build a new Belconnen store, which opened in May 2002.
In March 2005, a building in Batemans Bay came up for sale. Located at 19 Hughes Street, its location and design offered just what we were looking for to serve retail customers with convenient parking and great access for contractors’ trucks. At almost the same time, negotiations commenced to purchase the business of AJ & BA Barker Electrical Wholesale. Barkers had been established at Ulladulla and Batemans Bay for 23 years and had built up a loyal following of contractors and lighting customers within their local communities.
On 1 July 2005, Project Lighting took control of the Ulladulla and Batemans Bay locations. Renovations in unit 5 of the Hughes street site, including new showroom, trade and retail counters, offices and a mezzanine floor were completed and the new Batemans Bay branch opened on Monday 31 July 2006.
A block of land was purchased in Ulladulla and building a new showroom and warehouse commenced in February 2008. The new branch opened on 3 November 2008.
In October 2018 Project Lighting acquired Advantage Electrical Supplies in Orange, NSW
In June 2020 we permanently closed our Tuggeranong store.
